Bangkok, Thailand
There are plenty of good food in Bangkok. Some hits and some misses. Below are a list of my favourite makan places and dishes (not ranked in order):
1) Huaplachongnonsea (Update: Central world branch closed. Left Chong nonsi main brand)
Favourite dishes: Shrimp Tom Yum and Curry crab meat/ sotong
Address: Central World, 6th Floor, Unit A 603-4
Operating hours: 10.00am to 10.00pm
2) Shinsen Fish Market
Favourite dishes: Live seafood (sashimi, steam)
Address: 163/6 Soi Sukhumvit 39 KlongtonNua Wattana, Bangkok Thailand 10110
https://goo.gl/maps/FTmTRL6gMrtJwrMMA
2) Kuang Seafood
Favourite dishes: Cheap and good Zi char dishes
Address: 166 Kuang Seafood, 1-5 Ratchadaphisek 10 Alley, Khwaeng Huai Khwang, Khet Huai Khwang, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10320, Thailand
Operating hours: 11.00am - 3:00am
Remarks: There are 2 branches. I would definitely prefer this place to Somboon though Somboon is the more popular place among the tourist. Felt that Somboon is over rated and the hassle of getting a seat is just not worth it.
3) Pe Aor Tom Yum Kung Noodle
Favourite dishes: Tom yam noodle with crab shell minced meat. Lobster is optional.
Address: 68/51 Soi Phetchaburi 5, Khwaeng Thung Phaya Thai, Khet Ratchathewi, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10400, Thailand. (BTS: Phayathai station)
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon
Exit from Praya Thai BTS, go towards Payatai Plaza, cut through Payatai Plaza and exit. Turn left along the main road and first ally on the right. Remember to plan some time for queuing.
Remarks: Famously known as the best Lobster Tom Yum noodle. However, after I have tried a few times, I would say that it's not the lobster that makes the difference. The nice part of the dish is the crab shell with minced meat. I would just go for all ingredients in without the lobster.
4) Pranakorn Noodle
Favourite dishes: Fried pork skin, fish cake, boat noodle
Address: Century Mall, Thanon Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi, Bangkok 10400
How to get there: Leave Victory Monument BTS Station at Exit 4 and walk to the 1st Floor of Century Mall to reach Pranakorn Boat Noodle
Remarks: I prefer this branch in Century mall due to it accessibility and the clean and air conditioned environment. No need to go to the main branch at the canel when you have this option. Take note: This branch are frequent by locals thus staff doesn't speak a word of English, you got to put your body languages and calculator to a test.

5) Arno Butcher and Eatery
Favourite dishes: Aged beef steak
Address: 2090/2 Soi Naradhiwat Rajanagarindra 20 Naradhiwat Rajanagarindra Rd, 10120, Thailand OR Emquartier branch
6) Nam Sing Bird's Nest Shark Fin Restaurant
Favourite dishes: Steam scallops with tanghoon, sharkfin and bird's nest
Address: 39-47 Soi Texas, Phadung Dao Road, Yaowaraj, Bangkok, Thailand.
Remarks: Go easy with the bean sprouts for your sharkfin, we are not too use to eat raw bean sprouts. Bird’s nest is cheap, can try but won’t be as good as those we made at home. Nam Sing is beside T&K seafood. you can go for street food supper.
7) NARA
Favourite: Salted egg sotong.
Address: Central world level 7
Remarks: Generally the thai food was good but portion are pretty small.
8) SomTumNua
Favourite dishes: salad with crispy pork skin, crispy chicken and their fried spring rolls are the must try. Eat with sticky rice instead of plain steam rice.
Fried chicken - popular
Salad
Fried spring roll
Crispy catfish
Address: Siam square Soi 5 and its branches
9) MK Restaurants/ MK GOLD
Favourite dishes: Roasted Duck/BBQ pork/roast pork, steamboat
Address: Many branches. Central World, Siam Paragon, Siam Square, etc
Remarks: Roasted duck/bbq pork and roast pork are the "must eat". MK Restaurants are famous their suki (steamboat). The ingredients wise, there are nothing to shout about but what makes it delicious is it’s chilli sauce provided. Dipping your cooked food into the sauce just makes it delicious.
(Update: Chilli sauce standard dropped. Not good anymore)
10) Seabx2 wanton mee
Favourite dishes: Braised Pork/ Wanton Noodles
Opens Daily 9:30am – 5:30pm.
Remarks: It's getting more and more expensive and over rated. If you have craving for wanton mee, there is another stall opp Berkeley hotel lobby across the road. As good and cheaper.
11) Siam Paragon
Chingcha Charlee restaurant – authentic thai food at reasonable price
(Update: Restaurant closed)
Taling Pling restaurant – authentic thai food
After you café – Shibuya Honey toast and many other dessert
Harrod café – Instagram-able place with good freshly made scone
Gram - premium pancake
Location: G floor, look for Boots/McDonald/Pablo, shop is just around the corner.
12) Chatuchak Coconut ice cream - CocoJJ (Update: Closed)
Update: No more push cart coconut ice cream. They are other coconut ice cream stalls occupying the shop along the main road.
13) Jae Koy
This is a local stall which sells Thai Isaan (North eastern) cuisine. Got to know this place after watching korean variety "the adventure guide 2". This was one of the secret location for the night tuk tuk tour.
Dishes: Crispy catfish salad, bbq pork neck.
Order a sticky rice and dip the sticky rice into the salad sauce. Pork neck meat was chewy unlike our usual bbq pork
362/2-3 12-14 Phetchaburi Rd, Khwaeng Thanon Phetchaburi, Khet Ratchathewi, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10400, Thailand
(https://goo.gl/maps/dtGpaQY6xJ9VeZ3v8)
Opens from 5 pm to 3am
14) ThipSamai Pad Thai
Dishes: Pad Thai and Orange juice
Address: 313 315 Maha Chai Rd, Khwaeng Samran Rat, Khet Phra Nakhon, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10200, Thailand
Opens Daily, 5:30pm – 1:30am.
Famously known as the best pad thai but I feel that it's over rated. Omelette wrapped pad thai was almost cold probably due to the waiting in queue to be wrapped. The usual (unwrapped) pad thai tasted better as it was hotter but not worth going all the way for it. The lack of wok hei in the pad thai was disappointing. Queue was long but fast moving when we arrived around 9pm. We managed to get to seated within 30 min.
Grab driver told us that Leong Pha pad thai is better than Thipsamai and i realized that it just a few steps away and no queue. Pad thai was cooked with charcoal instead of gas. From what I read, Thipsamai used to use charcoal but this practise has been replaced.
There are actually quite a number of stalls along the stretch of road which are patronized mainly by locals. Dishes such as tom yam noodle, satay, fishball noodle, etc are crowded with people and smell really good. The famous ~S$40 crab omelette egg (@Raan Jay Fai) just a few shops down the road before the cross junction. We didn't try as we were too full after the pad thai.
15) Chicken rice (Update: Many branches everywhere and in most food court)
Dishes: Chicken rice
Don't waste your time and calories. Our SG chicken rice is much much better. 1 chicken breast was sliced into 4 thin slices to be sold as 4 plates. Chicken was not even tender and chilli sauce doesn't goes well with the rice. Soup was rather blend.

Old school herbal beef noodle/ rice. Portion a bit small but for the small portion, they gave almost equal amount of beef ingredients (100 baht soup kuey teow). Not too herbal and on the light side for the broth. Diff from our Hock Lam Beef noodle.

Accessories shopping:
1) Palladium mall basement 1 is a wholesale place for all kinds of accessories, from pearls to silver to Swarovski crystal accessories. It's relatively unknown to many as the mall is almost a ghost mall from level 2 onwards. You can see many shops selling strings of beads, crystals, pearls, stone, etc. Many shops do retail, just ask.
2) Oh la la boutique in Siam center, terminal 21 level 3, etc. Unique design by local designer.
This is my favourite and must go accessories shop every time I am in BKK.
3) Chatuchak market. There are quite a couple of good accessories stalls at Section 24 soi 4. There is another shop which i loves to go to for accessories too (see name card). (Update: Not too sure if the stall is still there)
