Ipoh/Kuala Selangor

My 5 days road trip itinerary:

Day 1:  SG - Johor Gelang Patah (for breakfast) - Klang (for lunch) - Ipoh
Day 2: Ipoh (Gua Tempurung, Tea plantation & Pamelo farm)
Day 3: Ipoh (Kek Lock Cave) - KL (Batu cave)
Day 4: KL - Kuala Selangor (Sky mirror) - KL
Day 5: KL - Yong peng (for lunch) - SG

Eat

Gelang Patah

1) Restoran xing hoo星和
81550, 2-24, Medan Nusa Perintis 8, Taman Nusa Perintis 2, 81550 Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia
Fishball/ minced meat noodle

2) Restoran 777/ Restoran 88/ coffee shop around the area
Medan Nusa Perintis 8, Taman Nusa Perintis 2, 81550 Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia
Coffeeshop with a good variety of food

Klang

Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh
Kaw 16, 32, Jalan Batai Laut 5, Taman Intan, 41300 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia

The area has quite a couple of Bak Kut Teh but only 2 of the bak kut teh shops are filled with people.  This shop seems to be most crowded.  If you like peppery BKT, this may not be for you.  This is the herbal version.  Personally, I like the dry BKT version more.

Ipoh

Ayam Tauge 芽菜鸡

1) Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau Restaurant 芽菜鸡

44, Jalan Raja Ekram, Kampung Jawa, 31350 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia
+60 12-520 3322
Opening hours: 6 to 10pm

This is supposed to be the best bean sprout chicken frequent by the locals but it was closed for 2 months when I was  there. Do try when you are there.

2)  Ipoh Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong

49, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee, 30000 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia
+60 5-254 4199

This is the tourist Tauge ayam place.  Tauge was plump and crunchy. However, the chicken wasn't as tender as I have expected. You can go with rice or kuay teow soup. According to some local, it's over priced and standard has dropped.

Peanut Candy

1) Ming Yue Confectionery

50, Jalan Peh Kee Koh, Taman Kampar, 31650 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia
+60 5-255 4128

This is the best peanut candy in Ipoh.  Peanut was crunchy and fragrant.  Prepare to queue for hours as there are limited amount for each day.  Do call before you head over. There is a limit of 1kg per adult.

2) Sin Weng Fai Peanut Candy Shop

69 & 69A, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

This shop is somehow related to Ming Yue Confectionery.  However, the peanut candy has sesame seeds and rice crackers added to it.  Slightly saltier too.  It is comparable to Ming Yue but with a twist.  There is a limit of 8 x 300g per adult.  This shop is conveniently located a few shops away from Lou Wong Ayam Tauge.

3) Ching Han Guan Biscuits

145, Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Taman Jubilee, 30000 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

If you couldn't get from no. 1 and 2 best peanut candy in Ipoh, this is the third alternative.  Their peanut candy is low sugar version.  Not too bad but peanut not as fragrant.

Dim Sum

1) Foh San Restaurant

51, Jalan Leong Sin Nam, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

Popular with both locals and tourists, this restaurant has a wide variety of dim sum for you.  Price is reasonably cheap and dim sum is delicious.  There is a rival dim sum (Ming Court) directly opposite of the restaurant which was equally crowded, I can't verify the quality as I have yet to try it.

2) Restoran Chooi Yue Dim Sum 翠月楼港式点心

2, 4 & 6, Tingkat Taman Ipoh 12, Taman Ipoh Selatan, 31400 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

This is another popular dim sum place. I read about it but didn't get to try too.

Salted baked chicken
Ayam Garam Aun Kheng Lim (Main Branch)
24, Jalan Theatre, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

There are many salted baked chicken around.  Apparently, this is the famous one and tend to sold out just 2 hours from the oven.  So do go early (before 11am).  Remember to eat the chicken when it's still warm if not, you will be eating jelly oil.

Dry Curry Noodle
Yee Fatt Dry Curry Noodle
39, Jalan Kampar, 31650 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

This place was recommended by my local friend.  The dry curry noodle looks like our satay bee hoon but tasted like curry (what else).  Delicious and you will pair this dry curry noodle with roast pork, bbq pork and chicken.  You can order yong tau foo as extra add on.

Beancurd
Funny Mountain BeanCurd
50, Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

Bean curd was smooth but comes in a very small bowl.  Overhype with tourists.

White coffee
Nam Heong White Coffee
2, Jalan Bandar Timah, 30000 Ipoh, Negeri Perak,

This is a must go place for white coffee and this coffee is addictive.  Very thick and rich coffee which tasted heavenly.  Got to try their egg tarts and egg pudding when you are there. Egg pudding is warm and melts in your mouth.

Yong tau foo (*skipped this place)
Dai Shu Geok Big Tree Foot
Jalan King, Off Jalan Pasir Pinji, 31650, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, 31650 Ipoh, Malaysia

Apparently, this used to be a famous stall but standard has dropped over the years.  Personally, I don't like this yong tau foo as they are deep fried and super oily.  Each piece of yong tau foo was oversized and fish filling was pretty tough.  The unique thing about this stall is that the yong tau foo served with assam laksa or curry noodle besides the usual dry/ soup noodle.   Assam laksa was ok but not fantastic, curry noodle cmi.

There are other food stall in the food court.  The fried chicken wings and rojak were quite good though.

Restaurant
1) Restaurant Pusing Public
G 57-65, Jalan Horley, Kampung Jawa, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

This is an old school restaurant with good food.  Very crowded and couldn't get a place.

2) The Museum 鬼式茶餐厅
1, Persiaran Greentown 7, Pusat Perdagangan Greentown, 30450 Ipoh, Negeri Perak, Malaysia

Very good food with reasonable price.  The dishes are really tasty and ingredients were generous.  The restaurant was well decorated and very nice ambience.  Highly recommended.

Yong Peng

Restoran Hock Swee Hin 福瑞兴餐馆
1953, Jalan Besar, Taman Sembrong, 83700 Yong Peng, Johor, Malaysia

Play

Ipoh

Gua Tempurung

Highly recommended.  Prepare wet attire (best is long pants and shirt with booties) and try out their tour 4 (dry and wet).  Minimally, try the tour 2 (dry)

Kuala Selangor (About 1 hour from KL)

Sky mirror
Do note that the best time to be there is 3 days from 1st and 15th of lunar calendar month due to the moon gravity.  This doesn't means that you can't go on other days, just that you may end up with super hot noon sun or no trip available due to high tide.  Do check out with the boat company or agency.

I would recommend that you prebooked with boat company if you have your own transport.  If not, sign up with an agency that brings you to and fro your hotel as well as seafood lunch inclusive sky mirror tour.

Below are 2 contacts that I have:

1) Boat company (which I use):  Fun Life at Kuala Selangor Sdn Bhd.  You can book via whatsapp +60 10 435 7792

Cost: RM 100 (Foreigner), RM80 (Malaysian)
Trip includes breakfast at Kuala Selangor jetty (coffee shop), return boat trip to the sandbank & photographer

2) Day tour company: Sky mirror. You can book via whatsapp +60 12 655 5534

Cost:  Depending on group size.  Around RM225 for small group and expect price to be cheaper if you have bigger group
Trip includes pick up to and from hotel in KL, return boat trip to the sandbank & photographer, seafood lunch

If you have whole day to spare, you may want to visit the firefly and blue tears (micro organism in the sea that gives a blue glow) in the evening starting from 8 pm.
